Roman’s Story

Roman Golden is the inspiration and first beneficiary of Roman Shield. As a child with profound autism who is nonverbal and requires 24/7 care, Roman and his family embody the need this organization exists to serve.

His family faced the question every family with a child with profound autism eventually confronts: What happens when we can no longer be there?

Rather than accept the uncertainty, they built the answer. Roman Shield was established to create lifelong financial security, stable housing, and comprehensive care—not just for Roman, but for every family navigating the realities of profound autism.

The gold in our brand honors Roman—representing dignity, worth, and the preciousness of every life. His name is our standard, and his wellbeing is the measure of our success.

Why “Shield”?

A shield is strong, unwavering, and permanent. It stands between those it protects and the threats they face. For individuals with profound autism, those threats are real: financial insecurity, inadequate care, system failures, and the fear of what happens after their caregivers are gone.

Roman Shield is that protection. We don’t just provide services—we stand guard. For life.

The Reality of Profound Autism

Understanding what families face every day.

24/7 Care, Every Day

Individuals with profound autism require around-the-clock supervision and assistance with every aspect of daily living—eating, bathing, dressing, safety. There are no days off for caregivers.

Nonverbal Communication

Most individuals with profound autism are minimally verbal or nonverbal. Pain, fear, and needs must be interpreted by caregivers who know them deeply. Losing a primary caregiver can be devastating.

Lifelong Dependence

Unlike some forms of autism where individuals gain independence, profound autism means lifelong dependence. There is no “growing out of it.” Planning must extend across an entire lifetime.
